Swelling after surgery is fluid that the lymphatic system has not cleared yet. Manual lymphatic drainage moves it, section by section, in the direction of the lymph nodes.
The pressure is deliberately light. The lymphatic vessels sit just below the skin, so pressing harder does not move more fluid. It bruises tissue that is already healing. Anyone promising an aggressive post-op massage is describing something else.
Most people start three to five days after surgery, once their surgeon clears them, and come two or three times a week at first. Bring your compression garment and put it back on afterwards.
